Views of Demolition and Construction
Getting Ready - July 9,10
Crews taking down the lights, heating units and speakers, and moved bleachers to safe places
Karla Shriver, Doug Cooper, Adam Schliesser
Terry Hillin, Tony Robb, Kyle Coster
The City crew took down doors, basketball hoop frames, bathroom fixtures.
The Alcon crew used a skid steer to scrape up the rubberized basketball floor.
The building had a small amount of asbestos in the swimming pool area, but it was mitigated several months ago. The facility as a whole had very little asbestos to mitigate and what was mitigated was not major.

Swimming Pool Demolition
Jim Willschau from SLV Earthmovers was in charge of the demo process. He provided his services free of charge as he strongly believes in this community project. The swimming pool and the bathrooms on the west end were started demo on July 20, and finished July 21.

Multipurpose Building Demolition
The crews started arriving at 4:30 AM Thursday, July 23.
Large cables were attached to the large cement rafters the night before. The morning of the tear down, the cables were stretched across Sherman Avenue to the Stampede parking lot where they were attached to 2 caterpillars and the rock truck.
A telehandler was used to knock out sections of the south wall below the large cement beams.
The excavators were then used on the east wall to knock most of it out.
One excavator came to the west side and knocked out the west wall.
Jim Willschau then gave the signal to the drivers of the caterpillars and rock truck who pulled down the roof to the ground. There was little sound and not hardly any vibration. There was a little dust, but it quickly cleared. There was NO damage to the grandstands.
The building was down by 7:09 am.
There was a minimal debris field, and Sherman Av was open by 9:30 am.
Thanks to Jim Willschau and his team, the Alcon team, and the Rio Grande County Road & Bridge crew. Rio Grande County provided a caterpillar, a water truck, and a street sweeper to assist in the project demolition.
